Penang 6D5N Year-End Trip 槟城年尾之旅
December 21, 2016 (Wednesday)
Penang is famous known not only for its Char Kuey Teow, but also Teochew Chendol. And we know just right the place to taste this local favourite.
Joo Hooi Cafe 愉园餐室●Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol
- Address : 475, Jalan Penang, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia.
- Operating Hours : 11AM–5:30PM
There isn't much parking available around this area. So we walk from our hotel instead. It took us about 20 minutes to reach as we are not familiar with the traffic here. We waited beside the road for quite some time for the traffic to slow down, so that we could cross the road. My suggestion here is to get GrabCar or Uber. It won't cost you more than RM6 per trip (depends on traffic).
Look at the queue. It is incredible scene to watch. It actually makes you wonder how good does the chendol (or, ice kacang) tastes, actually. By the way, the chendol stall is just right beside Joo Hooi Cafe. You can either have it inside the cafe, or by the road side. Many of them who only came for the chendol would just stand beside the road and finish it.
We found a table and sat down to chill a bit. There are other stalls inside Joo Hooi Cafe, which sells fried kuey teow, curry mee, popiah, penang laksa and etc. We ordered quite some dishes while enjoying the chendol.
- Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol / Ice-kacang - RM3.70 **recommend**

- Penang Laksa
- Yam cake **recommend**
- Popiah
- Assorted luk-luk
I really enjoy the meal here, despite it was always packed with people. The chendol is very delicious and refreshing. Surprisingly it is sold at RM3.70 (which is cheaper than elsewhere) yet the portion is quite generous. The red beans are big, fresh and sweet (usually I didn't like red beans, but I like this one).
Other than chendol, we enjoyed other foods as well, especially the yam cake which so soft to chew. Too bad the stall which sells fried kuey teow is not opened that day.

My youngest sister, in particular, is a big fan of museum. Nowadays there aren't much people like to visit museum (like, real museum with artifacts and all). But you know what, it isn't a bad idea at all. At least, by visiting local museums will give you insights of what has brought this town/city to what it is now, then you will start to appreciate things around you. Old streets, cultural buildings, memorial tower, people and all.
It is not allowed to take picture inside the museum. To give you a glimpse of it, above is how it's hallway look like. Very vintage, isn't it?
They portrayed and explained how British and people all around the world came to Penang, and built themselves homes here. People all around the world had different cultural background and spoke different language, yet they made an unique society with its very own colour.
On the second floor, there is an art gallery for them to display artworks created by various artists which present Penang from their view. In front of the museum's entrance, there are some antique cars displayed, which were known to be owned by previous "very-important-person".
We spent nearly 2 hours there and were totally immersed into the time tunnel. I thought it was very educational and informative, but sadly it needs more attention and support from both government and public in order to maintain its operation. I hope they could put more effort in turning the museum a more interactive and attractive place, so that more tourists (and even locals) could come and get to know Penang more.
