Penang 6D5N Year-End Trip 槟城年尾之旅
December 19, 2016 (Monday)
Last post, I mentioned we ordered a whole lots of street foods at New Lane Hawker Centre. My sisters and I decided to go for a walk instead after the full meal. From our hotel, Sunway Hotel Georgetown, Penang Times Square can be clearly observed for about 5 minutes walk across the main road. It is located beside McDonald's Birch House Drive-Thru.
Penang Times Square 槟城时代广场购物中心
- Address : Penang Times Square, Jalan Dato Keramat, 10150 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia
- Operating Hours : 10AM–10PM
It might be unusual to visit shopping centres as part of the itinerary. However, personally I like to do so, first because they usually have air-conditioners (it's hot outside), and second to understand the local shopping behaviour (shop variety, pricing, interior design, etc.). This is because I enjoy shopping very much, be it window shopping.
After crossing the main roads, quickly we noticed a giant Bumblebee - the transformer, of course (not the real Bumblebee bee). Cooooool!!! It is almost three of our size!
As Christmas is around the corner, Christmas decorations and beautiful lighting are well-observed - it's everywhere! And especially beautiful during the night time.
We entered the shopping mall through the nearest exit/door we could find. Apparently, we entered into the New Wing, where it is too quiet and not much people hanging around that area. Quickly we moved on from door to door, until we arrived (which I suppose) the Old Wing, where more people are observed and slightly more happening.
Feeling almost like entering into "Alice's Wonderland", we are so delighted to see beautiful wall paintings and interior decorations inside the shopping mall. The management must have spent much thought on it. The decoration varies from floor to floor, section by section - covered different seasons, countries and art elements.
Now join me and share my view.
- Penang Hill Railroad
- Indoor aquarium (ceiling painting)
- Penang Bridge (3D art interior decoration)
- Spring blossom tree (interior decoration)
- Autumn maple tree (interior decoration)
- The crew behind the scene for Marilyn Moore's photo shooting (3D trick art interior decoration)
- Playing drum for Korean traditional dance (3D trick art interior decoration)
- Time-machine (ceiling decoration)
- Halloween (ceiling decoration)
- Heart-gate (interior decoration)
- Mini museum which displays old radios
- Restaurant underneath
- Thailand's water market (3D trick art interior decoration)
- Musical wall (interior decoration)
- Japan's cherry blossoms and red-painted bridge (interior decoration)
- "I'm at the payphone, trying to call home" (interior decoration)
- London's underground subway (3D trick art interior decoration)
- Big Ben (wall painting)
I like their decorations very much. On the other side, it is weird that the shopping mall is not packed with people. Could these decorations been there for a long time? Which explains locals are not fancy that anymore. Obviously, the management did put a lot effort on putting them on.
It's a shame when I realized the pricing are relatively expensive. There is a pair of sunglasses (which apparently can be found easily from street market) costs RM79! (After that, it was proved that my intuition was right where I found the same sunglasses for RM30 from the other street) Anyway, probably because of rental and all, costing it so much. After all, it's up to the customer whether to buy, or not.
What do you say?
